The highly anticipated XXL Freshman List of 2019 has been released, and for the most part, people are actually agreeing with the picks. Comethazine, Blueface, Tierra Whack, DaBaby, Lil Mosey, Roddy Ricch, YBN Cordae, YK Osiris, Rico Nasty, Gunna, and Megan Thee Stallion made the cut for this years list. XXL is being praised for featuring three female artists, the most that they ever have featured on the list.
Comethazine has been making waves with tracks like “Walk,” “Bands,” and “Let It Eat,” coming from his popular mixtapes Bawskee and Bawskee 2. Signed to Alamo Records, the St. Louis, Missouri born artist most recently opened for A$AP Rocky for part of his US tour for his 2018 album TESTING. Comethazine even released a remix for this song “Walk” that featured A$AP Rocky following the tour.
Blueface is a name that you probably know from the viral track “Thotiana” and the memes about him rapping off beat. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the known Crip-affiliated rapper is signed to the infamous Cash Money Records and had a single distribution deal with Entertainment One Entertainment for “Thotiana” and all of the remixes that were officially released of the song. A remix with Cardi B was released, as well as one that featured YG, both receiving individual videos that were directed by Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade, and another remix was released featuring Chieda Oraka.
Tierra Whack is an up and coming artist known for her debut project Whack World, the fifteen-minute concept album with fifteen songs. The release of Whack World led to the Philadelphia native to sign with Interscope and Universal Music Group. Between February 2019 and March 2019, Tierra released five songs for “Whack History Month” titled “Only Child,” “CLONES,” “Gloria,” “Wasteland,” and “Unemployed.”
DaBaby is a viral rapper from Charlotte, North Carolina that has been blowing up since the release of his major label debut Baby On Baby, featuring the hit song “Suge.” The Charlotte rapper signed to Interscope under the Charlotte-based label South Coast Music Group following his previous project Blank Blank. He has had many viral successes because of the creativity he himself shows in his music videos, since the release of the video for “Suge,” DaBaby has been able to make every video that he releases hit the trending page on YouTube.
Lil Mosey is a melodic trap rapper from Seattle, Washington that has been able to make huge songs that have been heavily pushed by his videos with Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade. In October of 2018, Mosey released his major label debut project through Interscope, Northsbest, that featured the hits “Noticed” and “Kamikaze.” The video for “Kamikaze” on Lyrical Lemonade’s YouTube channel has over 100 million views and is still rising after almost a year.
Roddy Ricch is a Compton, California native that is on the rise and has released the independent project Feed Tha Streets as well as the Atlantic Records released Feed Tha Streets II. While you might not know his solo work, chances are you know his collaborative releases, like “Project Dreams” with Marshmello, “Racks In The Middle” with Nipsey Hussle and Hit-Boy, and “Splash Warning” with Meek Mill, Future, and Young Thug.
YBN Cordae is a rapper born in Raleigh, North Carolina and raises in the DMV area who is part of the YBN collective along with YBN Nahmir, YBN Almighty Jay, and many other members. Cordae, along with Nahmir and Almighty Jay, are signed to Atlantic Records, the three released YBN: The Mixtape in September of 2018. YBN Cordae’s first album is set to release soon and it is supported by the singles “Bad Idea” with Chance the Rapper, “Have Mercy” and “Locationships.”
YK Osiris is an R&B singer and rapper from Jacksonville, Florida that has had successful singles like “Valentine” and “Worth It” and hasn’t slowed down releasing, even though we haven’t received a project yet. “Valentine” was successful before it was officially released and led to him being signed to Def Jam, Osiris was also apart of Def Jam’s UNDISPUTED project. Aside from “Valentine” and “Worth It,” he has also released “Timing,” “Run It Up,” and most recently, “Freaky Dancer” with fellow XXL Freshman DaBaby.
Rico Nasty is a rapper born in New York City and raised in Maryland that has been releasing music since 2014. Her recent projects Anger Management with Kenny Beats and Nasty brought her to light with her unique style. Signed to Atlantic Records under her Sugar Trap. imprint, Rico has proven that she is like no other, using hardcore hip hop elements as well as poppy elements to surprise her fans with every release.
Gunna is a trap rapper from College Park, Georgia that is signed to Young Thug’s Young Stone Life Records under 300 Entertainment and Atlantic Records. The Georgia native takes a lot of influence from Young Thug but has made a name for himself with his Drip or Drown and Drip Season series of project. His work with Lil Baby, specifically their collaborator project Drip Harder, has proven that Gunna can have mainstream success, “Drip Too Hard” from their project has been popular since it’s release before the project and is heading towards 500 million streams on Spotify alone.
Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion is a rapper born and raised in Houston, Texas and has been writing raps since the age of fourteen. Signed to 1501 Certified Ent. under 300 Entertainment and Atlantic Records, her third mixtape Fever was released in May of 2019 and was her first major label release. The project featured popular tracks like “Cash Shit” with DaBaby, “Realer,” and “Simon Says” with Juicy J.
