Rakim Mayers, who is professionally known as A$AP Rocky, is finally back at home after spending nearly a month in jail in Sweden. Rocky, along with two other members of his posse, were harassed to the point of getting physical with a group of Swedish natives. Now, while the three were found guilty in the end, they were sentenced to serve no time, but better yet fined a total of $1,300 among the three, nonetheless they are all home free now.
Fans have been awaiting something to be released from the Harlem native, especially with how popular it is now to release “First Day Out” freestyles, but Rocky finally has something for the fans. On August 26, 2019, the trailer for “Babushka Boi” was released, showing that Rocky himself, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Nast, ScHoolboy Q, and streetwear designer Kamil Abbas. While the trailer that was released was labeled trailer #1, before another trailer was released, the music video for “Babushka Boi” was released on August 26, 2019, simultaneously with the single on all platforms.
The song is familiar to fans who have seen A$AP Rocky live on his Injured Generation Tour for his album TESTING, as well as to fans that have been replaying shaky concert footage of Rocky performing the song. “Babushka Boi” is produced by Rocky’s DJ and A$AP Mob engineer Hector Delgado and Boys Noize. Boys Noize has previously worked with Rocky “CALLDROPS” and “OG Beeper” from TESTING and remixed “Wild for the Night” along with Skrillex under their electronic duo name Dog Blood.
The video is directed by Nadia Lee Cohen, who has shown off her unique music video style before in Kali Uchis’ “After the Storm” with Tyler, The Creator, and Bootsy Collins. You may have a hard time recognizing the previously mentioned cast, as the makeup in the video turned Rocky himself, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Nast, ScHoolboy Q into completely different people.
